Has anyone ever told you that you might need an attitude adjustment? I remember in my 10th grade English class early in the year Mrs. Brennan called me up to her desk. She very politely showed me my grades and sat there without saying a word while I looked. Then she said, “Tommy, you are standing on very rocky ground and I suggest an immediate attitude change regarding this class.” With that she said, “You may return to your seat”…as I turned to walk to my desk she said, “and Tommy, you do know English is a required subject don’t you?” “Yes ma’am, I understand,” I replied. English was never a strong suit of mine in school but I did pass and actually after my attitude adjustment I did pretty good!
Sometimes we get caught up in the things of this world and even allow certain circumstances to negatively control us. Jesus, like Mrs. Brennan, is saying if the world has gotten you down you are focusing on the wrong things and you need an attitude adjustment.
I have started a series on this very topic…I got the idea from Jesus Christ Himself too! Actually Jesus presented this message and even today His message recorded in Matthew 5 is without doubt the greatest sermon ever preached. You’ve heard of it too; it’s called “The Sermon on the Mount.” The subheading in chapter 5 verse 2 says, “The Beatitudes;” actually these are attitudes we as God’s children through Jesus Christ should adopt. Some say Jesus’ words here no longer apply, but they do.
Life can be a real challenge and the world’s ways can really drag us down so why not join us on Sunday mornings at 11:00 and let Jesus show you the way to a happier and fuller life.
Walk with the Lord and be a blessing,
Its springtime and I can’t help but wonder; have you noticed all the pollen yet? I know, foolish question but I was just kidding anyway. For us allergy suffers this has been a tough spring but this too shall pass. While we dislike the pollen please take a moment to enjoy the spring because summer’s heat and humidity will be here before we know it. Remember spring time is one way God says, “Let’s do it again!” as the earth awakens from its winter nap.
Speaking of spring…what a wonderful Easter weekend we had! We were spared the rain and the children (and adults) enjoyed the Easter egg hunt, lunch and other goodies. Our Son Rise service was a blessing as we remembered that first Easter morn…praise be to God, the tomb where Jesus was buried is empty; for He is Risen! Thank you Ron & Ruddy for taking care of our breakfast too; we all appreciate what you did. I really enjoyed the 11:00 worship service too; it was truly a special service and I know you were blessed by being here. I want to thank our choir, pianist & music director for all their hard work in preparing for the special music; it was wonderful.
I also want to thank each and every one of you who helped us exceed our Annie Armstrong Easter Offering goal for North American Missions. Our mission field continues to grow right here in America therefore continued support for missions here at home is important.
Thank you all for your support as we strive to do the Lord’s will here at South Marietta. I hope to see you Sunday and be sure to invite someone to church!
Happy New Year!! Reflecting on 2015 it was an exciting year but it’s behind us. Certainly we don’t want to forget the many wonderful things the Lord has done this past year but it’s time to look ahead! We know 2016 will have its own rewarding events but it will have its challenges as well so I invite you to apply Proverbs 3:5-6 to your life this year. Here’s Solomon’s advice to us: 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.
Your Church Council met to plan events for the first quarter and we are excited about seeing how our Lord is going to work in and through us as His church. Our Children’s Church has been revamped and is off and running; THANK YOU to all who worked in the planning and restructuring of this program. THANK YOU to all who have volunteered to serve in this exciting and much needed ministry.
I close with this; do you realize Jesus loves you? I don’t care who you are, what you’ve done, where you come from, what color your skin is or anything else; JESUS LOVES YOU!
Mr. Karl Barth, a famed theologian was once asked, “What is the greatest thought you have ever had? He responded to the question with words from a children’s song many of us learned in church: “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” Keeping that thought in mind we must love God, worship and praise Him in all we do. I also hope that this year we will share the love of Christ with all we meet. The apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 13:13 “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
I love you all and I look forward to seeing you Sunday…be sure to invite someone too!
Greetings to all! Isn’t the sunshine and clear blue sky beautiful? After several days of cloudy skies and rain it was so wonderful to see the sun shining brightly. We certainly needed the rain and we praise God for it but our thoughts and prayers certainly do go out to those in South Carolina due to the flooding. We did have a leaking roof here at the church and much thanks to all of you who helped contain the leak and get the mess cleaned up. Let me just pause a minute and say how much I appreciate all of you and what you do to keep this church functioning. Karen and I recently made some visits and each family talked about how so many members of the church family were calling, visiting, bringing meals and such. Then every day I’m in the office I see many of you here taking care of this or preparing for that; thank you! There is no doubt in my mind there is much love in this place; love first for the Lord and then for this church. I am blessed to be a small part of this fellowship and I thank you for the opportunity.
One more thing and I’ll close…during the Sunday evening worship service I will be leading us in a study as we journey through the book of Revelation. We will begin this study beginning at 6:00 pm on October 18th so please plan on attending and invite someone too!
See ya Sunday
THANK YOU to each and every one of you for your help in Vacation Bible School. Our VBS guides took the children this year on a journey that was truly Off the Map. The students saw the king’s table and were taught how Daniel and his friends honored God by not eating the choice food from Nebuchadnezzar’s table. Next was the journey to the “fiery furnace” where the children learned how they must only worship God. As a result of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s determination to be faithful to Holy God, they were thrown into the furnace which was heated 7 times hotter than normal. In this exciting adventure the children also learned that because of these young men’s faith in God…they were SAVED! Here our VBS staff took time to tell the children that Jesus desires to save them as well.
The next big adventure was to the lion’s den where Daniel was thrown. Daniel was cast into this pit of angry, hungry, man-eating lions all because he refused to bow down to King Darius. Being thrown into this pit meant certain death, but not this time because God intervened. God sent His angel and he shut the mouths of the lions. God saved Daniel, and the children once again learned how God desires to save all people through Jesus Christ.
Some may wonder if our Vacation Bible School was a success or not so let me address that quickly. If a successful VBS meant to you that we had new families join our church then no, VBS wasn’t successful. If a successful VBS meant to you that we witnessed someone saved in VBS then no, VBS wasn’t successful. But if a successful VBS meant to you that we once again were given the opportunity to teach children and adults about the love of God, to know Jesus Christ, to follow Jesus and to trust Jesus as our Guide then YES!; Vacation Bible School was a huge success!
Again, much thanks to everyone for a successful Vacation Bible School. Thank you for all you did from the least to the most because whatever you did…you did it for the Lord and may He richly bless you!
I close with this thought; God desires to save all people including you if you have never been saved. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Notice in that verse of Scripture we are told, “whoever believes;” and that means just that…whoever! That means all people, that means ANY person; that means because of God’s love and grace salvation is freely given to whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord.
Salvation is given to all people who acknowledge they are a sinner, confess their sins to God and invite Jesus to come into their hearts to save them. Praise God and I hope to see YOU Sunday!
